7 lifestyle habits that give diabetes a foothold

1. A sweet tooth. If you’re fond of anything that gives you a quick sugar rush, it’s not going to help you out. And this includes a whole load of stuff you could term healthy, like honey, raisins, banannas and grapes. The big giveaway though are drinks that are sweetened with glucose or high fructose corn syrup – which pretty much means most fizzy drinks.

2. Eating too many refined carbs. Bread, cereals, pasteries, pasta and white rice all taste nice – filling too – but they are all big on fast release sugars.

3. Being a couch potato (but you knew this anyhow).

4. Stress or lack of sleep. Both of these give the thumbs up to the hormone cortisol which helps you become more insulin resistant.

5. Weight gain. That growing spare tyre around your middle is the path of least resistance for the fat made by your liver.

6. Not eating your greens and your fruit. They are packed with antioxidant vitamins which slash the risk of diabetes.

7. Ignoring supplement pills. We all know vitamin C is good for us, but did you know it protects you from diabetes too? The same goes for chromium and omega 3 fats.
