Why breakie is so important

Do you skip breakfast?

I’m forever reading that skipping the first meal of the day is a big no no – it doesn’t really matter what kind of health site you’re on. I’ve never really got why.

But even I can see why breakfast is important when it comes to balancing your blood sugar.

After seven-ish hours of slumber, your blood sugar levels are going to be really low.

So dashing out the door means it just continues to fall. And as it gets lower and lower, your hunger pangs get strong and stronger, so chances are you’re not going to be bothered about what you eat – you just want to eat anything.

In a perfect world, you would have had your low GL breakfast before you left – or taken it with you.

But we’re all busy aren’t we?

So off we dash and have coffee and croissant as soon as we can grab a break (That’s reall bad news for balancing your blood sugar level).

Being organised and crowbarring in time for breakfast sounds dull when you’re not used to it. But the reality is, either that or scoffing down high GI foods from the cafe or vending machine.

It’s easy to see how eating low GL meals, and snacking on low GL treats throughout the day keeps your blood sugar balanced: there’s no big hit of sugar.

Frankly it’s a big change me. I didn’t really eat until noon. Then I’d snack (toast mainly) and have a monster big meal in the evening.

On the upside, I’ve found a breakfast I love, which is stupidly filling and ridiculously healthy.
